I was commisioned to design, build and install a kitchen in a newly renovated space in the home of a young couple with kids. Beautiful materials, nice details and an overall clean, Scandinavian aesthetic were the brief. Along with the usual kitchen cabinets for storage, the kitchen was to have an open shelf to display handmade ceramics, and a tall pantry with ceiling height doors.

Materials used –
Doors – Ash veneer on Okoume Plywood
Solid timber elements – Oak wood
Cabinet interior – Birch plywood

The wish was to have a functional space with integrated appliances, where the purity of the material and the simplicity of the design would play a major role. Veneered plywood with beautiful grain was used for all doors and visible shelves, while Birch plywood was used for the interior for a strong and durable build.
By combining the light-coloured Ashwood veneer with oak wood, a harmonious mix of materials was achieved. The open shelf under the window displays beautiful handmade joinery in the oak wood frame. The Ashwood shelves and oak timber frame interact in a subtle cutout, truly integrating the two materials.

With an eye for detail, the designer-maker has beautifully implemented continuous grain over the three drawers. Horizontal lines of the shelves are continued on the drawers and doors of the cabinets next to the shelf. The interior of the drawers have bespoke cutlery drawers, designed entirely as per the client’s wishes.

An additional feature of this kitchen was a floor-to-ceiling cabinet, one half as a pantry, the other as a technical cabinet. The doors are over 2.7m tall and are made out of a solid wood frame that is clad with 9mm veneered plywood on the outside. This keeps them light and avoids warping. The cabinet provides ample space for all pantry items, and adjustable shelves provide flexibility. The beauty of the Ashwood grain is seen over the entire length in all its glory.
