My creative journey probably started at my Grandma’s kitchen table. I often sat there and arts-&-crafted while she was cooking. Seeing her hang up one of my pieces on her kitchen wall made me extremely happy. As I got older, I started making art to hang up in my own room, and even painted directly on the walls. I was constantly rearranging my furniture and started experimenting with creating a homely setting in a space.
In my years at design school I saw how artistic expression can be used to design objects. I worked with wood in the workshop for the first time and instantly fell in love with its warmth and versatility. I saw the beauty in simplistic design in the works of Finn Juhl, Charles & Ray Eames and George Nakashima. Nakashima’s philosophy about wood and using it for furniture still resonates with me today. During the latter half of my education there I built prototypes and models of my designs in the college workshop and felt the satisfaction of seeing one’s designs come to life.
As a young professional after design school I worked with a furniture rental start-up. Often the idea behind the design did not get translated into production and smaller details got lost in translation. I realised I wanted to be able to build my own designs and have control over the entire process. This led me to pursue a 3 year carpentry apprenticeship in Germany which taught me how to work with hand tools and machines, and appreciate and understand wood as a raw material. The two projects I designed and built during this time brought me a lot of satisfaction as well as recognition for my design- and craft skills. They are still one of my most precious works.
Since the beginning of 2021 I am self employed and build custom furniture for clients using the knowledge and skill I have gathered over the last 12 years. I enjoy every bit of the process, and am learning something new everyday. I design and build myself, and am sure that the end product is exactly how I had imagined it. I run my one-woman shop out of a basement workshop in Amsterdam West.
In June 2022, I received a scholarship from the Michelangelo Foundation to attend a summer school on Japanese Carpentry at the Domaine de Boisbuchet in France.
